Ingredients

  • 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil, for cooking
  • 4 burger buns and your favorite toppings

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, mash the black beans with a fork until they are partially broken down but still have some texture.
  2. Add the breadcrumbs, onion, garlic, cumin, chili powder, and smoked paprika to the bowl. Mix everything together until well combined. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties.
  4. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the burgers for 4-5 minutes per side, until browned and heated through.
  5. Serve the burgers on buns with your favorite toppings like lettuce, tomato, onion, and vegan mayo.

Chef's Notes

You can also grill these burgers. Just be sure to oil the grill grates to prevent sticking. The patties can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
